Who is 1upHealth?

We are a Boston-based company in the healthcare tech and interoperability space.

Like many new tech companies, 1upHealth was inspired to create a solution to a historically challenging and unsatisfying situation where industry data is locked between systems and made effectively unavailable. Unlocking this data improves the health care experience, enables innovation and provides the foundation for democratized capability and services across the industry. It has thus become our mission to make it easier to access, integrate, aggregate, and share healthcare data.

As a leader in interoperability we leverage our secure FHIR platform to offer a solution to break the barriers that hinder innovation and connectivity, reducing turnaround times and costs.

We have been recognized with 10+ awards and grants from the US government for our services and products. This includes the $1M LEAP Grant with Boston Children’s Hospital, which built the reference implementation for FHIR® Bulk Data (i.e., FLAT FHIR). We won the MassChallenge’s 2019 HealthTech $100k Diamond award and $10k Startup award in 2019 based on the numerous organizations using our APIs to power their products. In 2020, we received a Timmy award for being the Best Tech Startup and were recently named a Cool Vendor in Gartner’s Cool Vendors in Healthcare Interoperability publication.

What is FHIR and what are the benefits of FHIR?

Published by HL7®, FHIR® (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is an open source resource that enables the exchange of healthcare information. Now a standard under the CMS Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule, FHIR enables connectivity across the healthcare industry: health data is transformed into a clean and consistent format that can be used across various platforms. This transformation unlocks and improves ease of access to currently siloed information, allowing organizations to standardize and exchange data, and patients to gain access to their own health information. FHIR APIs thus enable an ecosystem where industry stakeholders can seamlessly connect and improve health care outcomes by increasing accuracy, efficiency and automation.

What makes FHIR beneficial is that the scalable connectivity it enables expands industry capabilities, such as population health management and analytics. This enables a holistic view of healthcare that will allow more efficient and personalized care, ultimately transforming human lives.

How does 1upHealth protect data, and where can I view 1upHealth’s privacy and security measures?

We take world-class healthtech standards very seriously. We never sell any of the data that we receive and do not share data without authorization and are SOC2 Type 2 and HIPAA-compliant. Under HIPAA, patients have a legal right to their own data. 1upHealth also adheres to the ONC’s 21st Century Cures Act Final Rule, which supports these rights.

What is the difference between direct EHR & patient mediated data access?

Patient mediated means that patients are able to authorize access to their own data and who they share their data with. This means that patients are able to be in control of their own health information. This method of accessing data is used if you want to enable your patients to authorize access to their health information from an approved 3rd party app.

Do you work with countries outside the US?

We are currently focused on the U.S. market. However, since FHIR® is an international standard, we are more than happy to have further discussions.

Am I able to choose what data sources my patients can connect to?

Definitely! Patients can choose to authorize their entire record or just specific data types.

How does 1upHealth normalize data and what standard data formats are available in the system?

We are able to connect to a multitude of data types (ex: CCDA, XML), and our FHIR® API platform will canonicalize the data to a FHIR standard.

We also provide a FHIR validator for all the available FHIR resources in DSTU2, STU3 and R4 versions.

We can work with all coding systems including:

  • ICD-10-CM
  • ICD-9-CM
  • SNOMED CT
  • LOINC
