The New 1up Platform: Bringing the Power of Lakehouse Architecture to Healthcare

Today marks a major milestone for 1upHealth – we just launched our new 1up Platform (v2 platform), built on a modern lakehouse architecture that leverages industry-standard FHIR APIs and open-source technologies for real-time health data exchange and analytics. Our world-class Engineering team has put tremendous effort into bringing this new platform to market, and I wanted to take a moment to dive into the technology that makes it so powerful.

Next-Level Scalability, Observability, and Reliability

In some respects, this new release is a natural evolution of the v1 platform. v2 offers industry-leading, CMS-compliant FHIR APIs just like our v1 platform. The onboarding experience is still facilitated by our outstanding Customer Implementations team, whose members work with our customers to set up their data pipelines safely and efficiently. The v2 platform is still a fully SaaS offering, hosted securely in AWS, with HITRUST Certification.

In many respects, though, v2 of our 1up Platform is revolutionary. It’s built around the concept of a data lakehouse. In short, a lakehouse combines the benefits of a traditional data warehouse with those of a modern big data solution. That combination means a lakehouse is efficient and scalable for querying massive-scale tabular data but also capable of processing semi-structured or unstructured data, such as text or images, at scale. Because of the lakehouse at the center of the v2 platform architecture, the v2 platform offers a level of scalability, data observability, and reliability that sets a new bar in this industry.

The v2 platform is built on the same open source technologies that power many of the most successful companies in the world, such as Apple, Netflix, Adobe, Uber, and Meta. Those technologies are built and maintained by open source communities with broad industry support, which means that 1upHealth is able to leverage the work of thousands of developers spanning hundreds of companies. As the technologies advance and evolve, the v2 platform will advance with them.

Real-Time Data Exchange, Scalable Management, and Advanced Analytics

The v2 platform offers an industry-leading experience for regulatory compliance, including CMS-0057 requirements for Payer-to-Payer, Provider Access, Patient Access, and Prior Authorization.

  • Built for Reliability & Observability: For every data record ingested, the v2 platform maintains a full audit trail of every step in that record’s lifecycle, from entering the platform all the way through serving. That audit trail not only means the platform offers rich usage reporting, but it also provides deep visibility into the ingestion process, including any issues, whether caused by inconsistencies in the data or failures in the system.
  • Seamless Ingestion & Automated Recovery: In the event of an ingest failure or a data issue, the ingestion process can be restarted from the last successful step, which greatly reduces the overhead of keeping ingest running smoothly for customers.
  • Real-Time Access & Query: In addition to the audit trail, the lakehouse architecture means that data can be queried at every step of the ingestion process and after it’s ready for serving, giving our Customer Success team the tools to make sure our customers’ data is always in top shape.
  • Security & Access Controls: Access to the data is governed by a powerful policy manager that ensures patients, providers, and payers only can access the records they’re supposed to, only in the way they’re supposed to, and only the parts of the record that are intended to be shared. That same policy manager governs API access as well as the query capabilities of the lakehouse, ensuring that data security is consistently enforced.
  • Built to Scale: The technologies that power the v2 platform were built to operate at the scale of exabytes of data and trillions of records processed per day. Those technologies give the v2 platform the ability to scale to meet the most challenging data interoperability demands.
  • Proactive Data Quality Management: The v2 platform was designed with multiple data quality gates built in to maximize the utility of the data being served. Through these data quality gates, issues in the data are detected as early in the process as possible and flagged for remediation. The v2 platform provides a data quality scorecard to customers that highlights common issues and can be used as the basis for data improvement.

A Future-Proof Technology Foundation with Lakehouse Architecture

Beyond the advantages the v2 platform provides for CMS compliance, the v2 platform also lays the foundation for future capabilities. The lakehouse at the heart of the architecture affords us the opportunity to build exciting new product capabilities to serve our customers’ business needs beyond compliance.

For all of these reasons and more, I’m thrilled to be introducing the v2 1up Platform to the world. The v2 platform is unique in this industry and builds on the knowledge and technologies developed for the modern data stack over the last decade. Bringing the rich capabilities of a lakehouse architecture together with 1upHealth’s deep knowledge of healthcare data interoperability means that the v2 platform is ready to transform the industry with healthcare data on demand.
